태백산 천제단 훼손한 여목사 일행 검거

27일 조용하던 고원청정도시 태백에 일대 파문을 일으키는 태백산 정상의 천제단(한배검)을 쑥밭으로 만든 사건이 발생해 태백시민들을 경악하게 했다. <사진자료제공 : 태백경찰서>
사건 발단은 의정부 신곡1동 소재 ㅅ롬교회 함모 목사(여, 49세) 주도로 신도 4명과 함께 06:20경 태백시 소도동 소재 태백산도립공원 내 천제단에서 찬송가를 부르며, 예배 후 문화재인 천제단 석축4개소를 손으로 빼내는 방법으로 훼손하는 것을 본 인근 주민이 신고해 모두 일망타진하게 됐다.
윤대근 태백경찰서장은 이번 사건에 대해 보고받은 후 현장에 전 경찰을 서둘러 배치하고 등산객들을 상대로 철저하게 검문검색 및 탐문하는 등 초동부터 직접 현장에서 진두지휘해 함모 여목사와 그 일행들을 체포할 수 있었다.
경찰 관계자는 “범인들은 사건 장소에서 서로 돌아가며 망을 보며, 일일이 손으로 훼손한 점을 보면 치밀하게 준비된 것으로 보이며, 하산 길 역시 2명, 3명 등 따로 행동한 점으로 보아 의도적이며, 악의적인 행동으로 본다.”면서 “치밀히 조사한 후 검찰에 바로 송치하기로 했다.”고 했다.
한편 “범행은 혼자 했다.”며 진술한 함모 여목사는 “산행 중 우발적으로 한 행동”이라면서 함께 체포된 일행의 무죄를 주장했지만 경찰은 이미 목격자를 확보한 상태이다.
태백산 천제단은 국가지정 중요민속자료 제228호로 ‘삼국사기’ 등 여러 기록에서 신산(神山)으로 섬겨지며 제천의식의 장소로 알려져 있는 역사적 가치가 많은 곳으로 이번 몰지각한 한 女목사와 그 일행의 소행으로 인해 태백시민은 물론 인근 지역민의 자존심에 큰 상처를 주었으며, 천제단 훼손으로 6월 12일 도민체전에 사용될 성화 채화행사와 10월 3일 개천절에 치러지는 천제(天祭)가 무산되는 것은 아닌지 태백시와 시민들은 아연해 있는 상태이다.
박종기 태백시장은 천제단 훼손사건에 대해 “먼저 시민들에게 죄송하다.”면서 “이번 사건을 계기로 관내 문화재 관리에 좀 더 적극적으로 대처할 것이며, 천제단 등 중요한 곳에는 감시단의 상시 운영 계획을 준비할 예정이다.”고 했으며, 김정식 시의회 의장 역시 “너무 황당한 소식”이라 했고, 심창보 시의원은 지역구에서 일어난 큰 사건에 대해 어떻게 생각하냐는 질문에 '법에서 잘 처리할 것'이라고 대답했다.
권영한 태백문화원장은 천제단 훼손에 대해 “종교적 이유가 아니길 바란다.”면서 “이런 사태가 발생한 것에 대해 통탄하며, 국민들로부터 존중받고 사랑받아야 할 문화재들이 더 이상은 수난 당하지 말아야 할 것”이라며 관련 성명서를 발표한다고 했다.
최근 서울의 남대문 화재, 강원도의 낙산사 화재 등 산불이나 인위적인 행동으로 훼손되는 문화재들을 바라보면서 많은 국민들이 안타까워하고 있는 시점에 한 종교인의 그릇된 행동이 또 한 지역민들의 자존심에 큰 상처를 남겼다.
이번 사건의 결과에 대해 시민들의 반응은 “철저히 수사해 해당범죄의 최고형을 바란다.”는 대답이 대부분으로 경찰이나 검찰 나아가 법원에서의 처리결과에 대해 인근 주민들의 많은 눈이 주목하고 있다. <태백인터넷뉴스>
